Get sign-in codes by text message
An optional extra way to receive a sign-in code. The authenticator app is still the recommended way and keeps working.
Steps
- Open Two-factor authentication and find the text-message card below the authenticator app.
- Type your mobile number with its country code, starting with +, and confirm it with the code we text to it.
- Turn on text-message sign-in codes. If it is your first sign-in check, save the recovery codes shown — they appear once.
- Text-message sign-in starts three days after you add or change your number; your authenticator app and backup codes keep working meanwhile, and a change of number emails you an alert.
At sign-in, choose “Text me a code instead”. A company can allow the authenticator app only, and then text-message codes are not accepted there.
