Group people into departments

How your people are grouped, and what payroll is charged to. Ten people rarely need more than two or three, and a department is also where a cost centre is named, so it is worth doing before the first pay run rather than after it.

You need

  • hr.departments.create

Steps

  1. Open Departments and press Add department.
  2. Give it a Name. Code is optional — fill it in only if your business already uses department codes.
  3. Cost centre is optional too: Payroll for this department is charged here.
  4. Press Create. The row then carries a Headcount, and a Manager where one is on record.
  5. To rename a department, or give it a code it was missing, press Edit department on its row and then Save.
  6. Delete closes a department and moves nobody. The confirmation names the department and says so plainly: the people in it keep their records and show no department until somebody moves them.
  7. Org Chart is the other half of the structure, and it is a read rather than a form — Who reports to whom. Search it by name, job title or department. It stops at a fixed depth and tells you where: The chart stops here. Check the reporting lines below this person.

If the chart says No reporting lines yet, then no reporting line is on record for anybody yet and there is nothing for it to draw.
