Set up cost centres and read cost by each one
Cost centres are the parts of the business you want to see the cost of on their own. The parts of the business you measure cost by, such as a factory, a production line or the office. The cost report adds up the expense charged to each one.
You need
accounting.accounts.readaccounting.accounts.createaccounting.accounts.updateaccounting.reports.read
Steps
- Open Cost Centres and press New cost centre.
- Give it a Code and a Name, and a Description if it helps.
Up to 20 letters, digits, dashes or underscores. Fixed once anything has been posted under it.
- To change one later, open its row and press Edit cost centre.
- When a part of the business closes, press Archive rather than deleting it.
An archived cost centre keeps its history and still appears in the cost report, but no new cost can be posted to it.
Reactivate brings it back. - Under Cost by cost centre, choose the two dates to read the Cost of each cost centre.
Expense accounts only — debits less credits between the two dates you choose, both days included.
Today no screen charges a line to a cost centre yet — the ledger accepts one, but no form offers the choice — so until it does the report shows every cost under Not charged to a cost centre. The cost centres you set up now are the ones it will use.
